A deadly two-vehicle accident unfolded early Saturday morning on Interstate 10 in Cathedral City, resulting in one fatality and five individuals being hospitalized. The crash occurred at approximately 6:37 a.m. on February 21, 2026, along the eastbound lanes just west of Bob Hope Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities indicated that a Lexus traveling in the far-left lane had been reported for erratic driving moments before the incident. The vehicle abruptly moved to the right and struck a Toyota carrying five occupants in a neighboring lane. Investigators also observed standing water near the roadway due to earlier rainfall, creating hazardous driving conditions at the scene. After the collision, the Lexus came to rest upright in pooled water, while the Toyota overturned and became submerged. Four passengers inside the Toyota were able to escape the overturned vehicle, and the Lexus driver exited his vehicle without assistance. The Toyota’s driver, identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office as 65-year-old Jose Crespo Guevara of Bell, was trapped underwater and later pronounced deceased after being transported to Desert Regional Medical Center. The Lexus driver was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Emergency personnel worked extensively at the scene to rescue victims and clear the wreckage, leading to significant traffic delays along eastbound Interstate 10 as the investigation continues.
