Pedestrian collisions remain a serious public safety issue in California, which consistently records some of the highest fatality numbers in the nation. Los Angeles ranks among the most dangerous cities for pedestrians, with significant numbers of deaths reported each year. State data shows that pedestrians account for a substantial percentage of traffic-related fatalities, including a disproportionate number of children and seniors. Thousands more suffer non-fatal injuries annually, often resulting in long-term physical and emotional harm.

Under California law, motorists are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks. When drivers fail to do so, they can be held legally responsible for the injuries or deaths that result. Even when a pedestrian is not inside a crosswalk, drivers still have a duty to operate their vehicles safely and remain attentive. California’s comparative fault laws allow injured pedestrians to recover compensation even if they were partially at fault for the incident. Pedestrian injuries may also arise from hazards such as defective sidewalks, reckless cyclists, or other dangerous conditions.

Victims of pedestrian accidents may pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost income, rehabilitation costs, pain and suffering, and other damages, and families may bring wrongful death claims when a tragedy occurs.
