NBTA Board Certified: You have probably heard that doctors can be “Board-certified” in their fields of specialty. Lawyers have a certification process as well, although it is not a requirement to practice law. A Board Certified Attorney with the National Board of Trial Advocacy must have an enhanced level of expertise and substantial involvement in the specialty area of certification. The NBTA certifies Civil Trial Advocates through a rigorous examination on ethics and professional responsibility, the rules of evidence, the rules of civil procedure, and trial advocacy. Individuals who pass the examination then must present a legal writing sample, which must be reviewed by experts. The applicant is then subjected to a peer review, which includes recommendations of judges before whom the applicant has recently tried civil cases. Only after passing this gauntlet is a trial lawyer allowed to be “certified” as a civil trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
