One person was killed in a wrong-way crash on the 405 Freeway in Hawthorne during the early morning hours of July 21, 2026. According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on the northbound lanes near Rosecrans Avenue. Investigators believe the crash involved a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the freeway. Emergency crews responded to the scene and found that one person had suffered fatal injuries. Another individual involved in the collision was transported to a nearby hospital, although authorities have not released information about that person’s condition. Officials have not yet identified the person who died or released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The severity of the collision forced authorities to shut down all northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway for several hours while investigators processed the scene. Traffic was heavily impacted as motorists were diverted around the closure during the overnight hours. The freeway remained closed until approximately 5 a.m., when all lanes were reopened. Detectives continue to investigate what caused the vehicle to travel in the wrong direction and whether alcohol, drugs, or other factors contributed to the deadly crash. The fatal wrong-way collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
