This is probably the first time you’ve ever been in an accident, or injured, and needed a personal injury lawyer. So it’s difficult to know where to begin.
One of the first things you can try and do is talk to a friend of yours in your family who may be a lawyer. It doesn’t have to be a personal injury lawyer, maybe a divorce lawyer, something like that. Oftentimes other lawyers know who the best lawyers are in their community, but if you don’t have a friend of yours who’s an attorney, you’re probably going to have to go to the Internet. But where do you start?
One of the first things to do is try and find out if your personal injury lawyer has a proven track record of success in getting good verdicts for their clients. One way to do that is the website for the Million Dollar Advocates Club or the Multimillion Dollar Advocates Club. That website lists attorneys in each state who have been successful in getting their clients million dollar verdicts and often multimillion dollar verdicts. I’m a lifetime member of both the million dollar advocates forum and the multimillion dollar advocates forum.
Another thing you can do is go to the site Avvo, A-V-V-O. Avvo ranks lawyers on a 1 to 10 scale on such things as peer recognition, awards and distinctions, experience in their field,
customer satisfaction and things like that. I have a perfect 10.0 rating with Avvo and was also given Avvo’s customer satisfaction award for giving the best advice to clients over the internet.
Another thing that you can do is find out if your trial lawyer is ‘board-certified.’ You’ve probably gone to a doctor before and found out if they are board-certified in their field, where lawyers have something similar. The National Board of Trial Advocacy certifies lawyers and trial advocacy and requires them to take a pencil and paper test and get certifications from other people in their field. I am certified with the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
And another thing you can do is go to the website called Martindale-Hubbell. Martindale-Hubbell asks other attorneys in the area to rate personal injury lawyers in their field for such things as competence in their field, awards and distinctions, types of verdicts they’ve gotten for their clients and so on. I have a perfect Preeminent rating with Martindale-Hubbell.
And finally the last thing to do is find out whether your attorney has good customer satisfaction. They may get all the verdicts in the world, but what if they don’t return your phone calls?
