A deadly single-vehicle crash in Pomona on June 7, 2026, left one man dead and led to the arrest of the driver on suspicion of DUI. According to the Pomona Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Santa Clara Drive near Calle Del Mar. Authorities said a black Subaru WRX was traveling northbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The car veered off the roadway and slammed into a tree, causing significant damage to the vehicle. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the driver, identified as 47-year-old Jorge Abascal of Covina, outside of the crashed Subaru. Inside the vehicle, an unidentified 37-year-old passenger was discovered in the back seat suffering from severe injuries.
Police officers and Los Angeles County firefighters immediately provided emergency medical care to the passenger. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said they suspected the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
Abascal was taken into custody and booked into the Pomona City Jail on charges of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
