Two Killed, One Missing After Medevac Helicopter Crash Off Catalina Island

On September 30th, 2026, two people were killed, one person remained missing, and two others were hospitalized after a medevac helicopter crashed into the ocean off Catalina Island. Los Angeles County Fire Department officials received reports of the crash shortly before 8 p.m., prompting a major response involving firefighters, lifeguards, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Authorities said the helicopter had departed Catalina Island and was traveling toward the mainland when it went down shortly after takeoff. Five people were reportedly aboard the aircraft, and emergency crews located four of them during the initial search. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, while two survivors were transported to mainland hospitals in stable condition. Search-and-rescue crews continued looking for the fifth person who remained unaccounted for.

Preliminary information indicated that those aboard may have included a pilot, a nurse, a patient, and two other individuals, although officials had not yet confirmed the identities or roles of everyone aboard. The helicopter reportedly came to rest approximately 240 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, potentially complicating recovery and investigative efforts. The aircraft was reportedly operated by REACH Air Medical Services, which provides critical-care air and ground medical transportation services. The company said it was gathering information and coordinating with emergency responders and authorities following the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to lead the investigation into what caused the fatal medevac helicopter crash.

At the Medler Law Firm, we help victims of aviation accidents and their families pursue compensation when negligence, mechanical failure, or other wrongdoing contributes to a catastrophic accident. We investigate these cases by examining flight records, maintenance and inspection histories, pilot qualifications, aircraft components, communications, weather conditions, and evidence collected by agencies such as the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration. In helicopter accidents, we investigate potential claims against the aircraft operator, owner, maintenance providers, component manufacturers, contractors, and other companies whose conduct may have contributed to the crash. When a medical transport helicopter is involved, we also examine whether the aircraft was properly maintained and operated and whether applicable aviation and air-medical safety requirements were followed.

We work with qualified aviation, engineering, accident reconstruction, and medical experts when necessary to determine why an aircraft went down and who may be legally responsible. We pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, future care, pain and suffering, and other damages suffered by survivors of serious helicopter and aviation accidents. When an aviation accident results in death, we help surviving family members pursue wrongful death claims against all responsible individuals and companies and investigate every potentially available source of insurance coverage. At the Medler Law Firm, we are prepared to take on the complex technical and legal issues involved in aviation accidents while aggressively pursuing justice and maximum compensation for victims and their families.
