Authorities are investigating the tragic death of a woman who fell from a balcony aboard a Carnival cruise ship near Catalina Island on April 27, 2026. The incident occurred Monday morning on the Carnival Firenze, a nearly 1,000-foot Italian-themed vessel that departed from Long Beach and was traveling between Catalina and Ensenada, Mexico.
According to statements released by the cruise line, the woman fell from the balcony of her stateroom and landed on a lower deck. Family members traveling with her immediately alerted the ship’s crew. Emergency protocols were initiated as crew members responded to the scene.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the fall remain unclear at this time. The identity of the woman has not been publicly released. Authorities boarded the vessel while it was positioned off Catalina Island to begin their investigation.
Passengers were being transported to Avalon, the island’s only city, via tender boats at the time. The woman’s family has since departed the ship and returned home. Carnival stated that its Care Team is providing support to the family during this difficult time.
The cruise line also expressed condolences, noting that their thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones. Catalina Island, located approximately 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles, remains a popular stop for cruise itineraries. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
